Internalization
St. Johannes College is a place alive with international atmosphere where people with multi-culture, ethical backgrounds and languages interact freely and learn cooperatively from others’ experiences in every day school life. Both kindergarten and primary sections had held an International Week(國際周) in April 2009 and May 2009 respectively to mark the multiculturalism at school. It was a great opportunity for students to expand their horizon and explore cultural diversity in the school community. In order to create and enhance the wonderful learning atmosphere, students were encouraged to dress up in the costumes of own countries to coincide with the theme of the day including China, Korean, Canada, United States of America, British and France, and the event finally was concluded with a smashing parade.
Fun In Science and Math
During the Easter holiday, between 9 April 2009 and 11 April 2009, our school coorganized a Science and Mathematics Camp with the Hong Kong Science and Technology University (HKUST) for students between Primary 2 and 6. There were three concentrations:
Day 1:Exploration of Force & Pressure
Day 2:Exploration of Electricity
Day 3:Creative Mathematics
The themes and activities of the camp covered theories and gave applications related to relevant scientific and mathematical theories. Students who had parti- cipated in the experimental and hands on activities had increased their interests in the two subject areas, gained a new sight in science learning and problem solving and have led to better understand of logical thinking.
Oxfor English Summer Camp
The Oxford Cambridge English summer camp was held during the period from July 15 to July 22, 2008 for our P.1 - P.5 students. This Camp took place at the United College, the Chinese University of Hong Kong (香港中文大學聯合書院).
At the camp, students studied and stayed together with native English tutors. Regarding the organization of the camp, the teaching materials were examined and revised by the Professors at Cambridge and Oxford Universities; the English tutors were selected by the appointed staffs from HKSAI and all of the tutors come from Cambridge and Oxford Universities. Besides the usual lessons and group studies, there were tutor lessons in the afternoon, providing students with one-to-one tuition sessions with their tutors. Moreover, students had chances to go sightseeing and interviewed visitors from foreign countries. Students were overwhelmed with joy and found this experience precious and memorable.
Intra School Academic Association
Students actively take part in various academic intra-school competitions throughout the year. The aim of competitions is to promote education and team- work in a fair competitive outlet for the students who are particularly talented or interested in different subject areas. One of the most exciting competitions is the Intra-school Academic Competition which always held in June for Kindergarten Section and July for Primary Section each year.
Co-Science Workshop: Robot Creation
A number of primary students had participated in a robot creation workshop in April,2007. The goal of the workshop is to utilize new technologies in the context of constructive education. Students were giving an opportunity to employ technology from the LEGO series and created own robots with specific micro-soft. The learning experience assisted children to develop technological fluency and creativity with critical thinking. Students enjoyed learning through construction and would never forget the memorable experience of robot design.
